And it's funny how I imagined That I could win this win-less fight Maybe it isn't all that funny That I've been fighting all my life
It was saturday morning and Iain entered the Hufflepuff common room in his pyjamas and still half asleep. He'd spent the night in Cailean's dorm, but five minutes ago (just a little before eight o' bloody clock) his brother and dorm mates had started waking up and preparing to get some work done or whatever it was that Ravenclaws did on Saturday mornings. Iain had walked back to his own House on automatic pilot, mumbled the password under his breath and staggered inside. Without regarding anyone who was there (because, really, it was far too early and anyone with common sense should be in their beds!), he flopped onto the empty sofa nearest the fire, curled up, and continued his nap as though he hadn't just traipsed through half the castle whilst still half asleep.
He didn't start waking up again until three hours later because his stomach complained - he'd missed breakfast and he never functioned well without his morning coffee or sugar for that matter. Groggy, he rubbed his eyes and sat up slowly. He looked like he hadn't slept for three nights - which was technically true, and one night hadn't been enough to catch up. Iain reached for his pocket, but he obviously didn't have his packet of cigaretts in his pyjamas. "Oh, fuck this." He sighed and sagged back on the couch. He really couldn't be arsed to move. But he was hungry, he needed coffee, and he very much craved a cigarette.
Just a bit longer. He was going to get up. Just another minute.

[/style] Dorcas tended to get up generally early, despite not being a morning person. She was sure it was a curse set up by mother nature, but nevertheless as she woke up on time at six o' clock - later than she had all week - she immediately went to the showers and cleansed herself. She brought her clothes with her and simply stuffed her dirty ones in a bag. She swung the bag over her shoulder once ready and appeared back in the common room just long enough to throw the bag onto her bed, making a mental note to take care of it later. At the moment, her stomach was growling and there was no way she could hold off breakfast any longer.
After eating a bit of fruit and biscuits, paired with some apple juice, Doe headed down to the Black Lake to enjoy the sun that was just rising. It was a beautiful sight to catch, and as she sat there on the wooden pier, she hoped to be able to venture there later with friends and take a quick dip. Sure, it'd be pretty chilly, but Dorcas could be adventurous sometimes. A very limited 'sometimes,' but she could nonetheless.
As much as enjoying the morning air was, Dorcas reminded herself that she had a few assignments to catch up on. She trudged back into the castle with less hurry than she did when she'd come outside. But as it wasn't exactly too far, she quickly found herself back in the captivity of the castle walls. She sighed before entering the fruit portrait near the Great Hall and walked slowly down the tunnel. Upon entering the common room for the badgers, she immediately caught the voice of a rough, just-waking male. It was familiar. And as she looked to the couch, she found the source of the voice and found that the face was even more familiar. She grinned and took a seat in the adjacent chair, leaning forward as to make it apparent she was talking to him. "Well good morning," she said cheerfully, letting her smile fade just a little so he wouldn't think she was obnoxious.

He should try to stop himself from slipping into a bad mood. He knew he should - it just wasn't that easy. Granted, it didn't often always work either, but Cailean usually told him ought to count his blessings - that was worth a shot. So, even though he had no energy, no coffee, no breakfast, and no cigarettes at hand, what did he have? What was good about this morning? Well, at least he was clothed. It would have been a problem, had he been sitting in the common room naked. No one would have appreciated that, would they? Not that his pyjamas (flannel tartan bottoms and a Cat Stevens bandshirt) were that flattering, but it was definitely better than nothing but his skin. So, not naked was good. He was also warm - something he had come to appreciate after his little adventure in the lake - so that was blessing number two. Iain pulled one knee to his chest while the other leg dangled off the sofa, pushing his bare toes into the carpet. The carpet was good. Soft carpets always were. Iain wondered how the House Elves kept it feeling soft as though it was new - with all the students dragging furniture around all the time you'd think it would be ruined before long.
Speaking of students, some company would be good, actually. Iain guessed that the sleepier or lazier students might still be in their beds and the rest would already have gone out. They probably had just passed him by without a second glance as they left the common room. (Because, admittedly, this wasn't the first time he'd fallen asleep on the common room sofa at some point.) Iain was just about to try and muster up the energy to get off the couch to either get dressed or fall into his own bed to continue sleeping the day away when Dorcas Meadowes sat down next to him. Brilliant! "Well, certainly a morning - is it even still morning?" He had no idea what time it was, but Iain's mood swung like a pendulum, from lethargic to energetic, in spite of the lack of carbohydrates in his bloodstream. "And a better morning for your being here," he added. "You'd think everyone was out and gone - far too quiet." Dorcas really needn't have worried about seeming obnoxious, Iain was doing a fine job on his own.

[/style] She couldn't help but chuckle at Iain's complete lack of knowledge on the time. Doe shook her head, a smile still plastered against her face. "Nope! Actually, it's just about lunch time," she said. A blush crept into her cheekbones as he said it was better with her there. Dorcas knew Iain was just a friend and all that, but when people charmed her, she couldn't help but feel slightly shy about it. It was just her nature, after all, but she often hated how frequently she seemed to blush. Did people notice it as much as she?
"Awe, well thank you!" she exclaimed, giggling a bit. Dorcas set her hand on her neck and and rubbed at it. She seemed to have slept a bit on the wrong side which resulted in a small bit of tension in her neck, but it wasn't too bad. After massaging it for a few moments, the pain dissipated and she was free to set sights back on Iain. "It is a little too quiet, huh?" Doe agreed, then smiled. It wasn't like the Hufflepuff house was known for being really loud or anything in the first place, but with no one around it was creepy. Dorcas liked noise and happiness. Laughter, really. It made her feel at home. The quiet made her feel like she had to lower her voice and tip-toe around, very uncomfortable-like.
"Would you care to join me for lunch, and maybe we can have some fun with some treats I got from Honeydukes? There's this new snack I got...might be fun to try out."

Well, he had been asleep for hours and wasn't in the habit of wearing a watch, hence his desorientation. That said, it was very typically Iain - because the common room did have a clock somewhere, he had just never noticed it, not in all the years he'd sat and laughed and slept and done homework there. "Oh, lunch - I could do with some lunch," he chirped. "I think I slept through breakfast - Cailean kicked me out of bed before eight this morning!" he complained, rolling his eyes. Although he noticed Doe's blush, he didn't mention it. He knew her well enough to know what he was like and as Iain wasn't stingy when it came to compliments, this happened often enough and he didn't mind. He tended to run his hand through his hair and tap his fingers on things, Dorcas blushed a lot. To each their own.
He chuckled and sat up a little, smiling brightly. "Oh, it is, very quiet - which is good when you're sleeping, but pretty bad when you wake up alone." Iain was bad at sleeping alone, he hated waking up with no one there. It was the epitome of loneliness in Iain's opinion. That was why he loved his house. Iain wasn't much into the whole house-thing, but being in Hufflepuff meant that there were usually nice people around who didn't mind sharing personal space or talking.
Iain bounced on the sofa a little. "Screw lunch, let's just eat candy!" He grinned. "Give me three seconds to get dressed." Before Dorcas would even had the chance to properly object, he had rushed down the stairs to the boys dorms. It was only a Saturday, so he pulled on some jeans and the first shirt he found. He accidentally put it on inside out at first, but then noticed this as he was walking up the stairs and turned it back on the right way just as he entered the common room again. "Okay, all set!" he beamed.

[/style] Doe was pretty quiet throughout his agreements, simply nodding at him in appropriate spots through conversation - or, well, him talking. It wasn't until he said they could skip lunch that she giggled. "Sure! More candy for us!" she shouted, then laughed as he hopped out of the couch almost immediately and headed toward the boys' dormitory to change. She stood up knelt down by the fire, holding her hands up to the flames as they danced in place. She smiled as she felt the warmth on her face, a warmth unrelated to blushing but from the flames. It was great.
As he returned, Dorcas realized that she needed to retrieve the sweets she'd mentioned. "OH! Let me go get the sweets!" she exclaimed, running off toward the girls' dormitory. She reached it quickly and hurried toward her trunk, pulling out a bag filled with treats. She smiled. She swung the bag's handles over her wrist and trotted back toward the main common area, where she found Iain once again.
"BACK!" she shouted, laughing. She took a seat on the floor and patted the spot next to him, then rolled over onto her stomach. Dorcas opened the bag and grinned as she searched through it. "Ah...Pepper Imp!" she exclaimed, then took one out and held it in mid-air. "I dare you to try it!" Dorcas said excitedly, raising her eyebrows devilishly. She had tried one before - but it was in her first year. She had been tricked into it, of course, but if Iain ate it for her amusement she would do the same. It was only fair, of course.

Iain grinned broadly. "No such thing as too much candy!" he agreed, running a hand through his hair to brush it out of his face. It was fairly long, but that didn't mean it couldn't stick out at all angles. Iain had always worn it long enough to just tuck it behind his ear, but his mother had cut his hair over the summer and it hadn't quite grown back to the length he liked. He tripped over his feet a little, but luckily landed on the sofa - that's what you get for being too tall for your own good as well as changing your shirt and not watching where you're going. Iain laughed as Doe suddenly seemed to realise that the candy wasn't going to come to them all on its own. He made himself comfortable while she was away, half sitting, half lounging on the sofa, bare feet stretched towards the fire. A Saturday of eating candy. That sounded perfect. He could always do his homework tomorrow. Or tonight, before the sugarrush wore off.
As Dorcas came back in and called out, he pretended to press a button on an imaginary stopwatch. "Record time!" he called back, his Scottish accent all the more noticable due to his enthusiasm. "We should compete in the Olympics or something," he chattered as he slid off the couch and onto the carpet. "Just hang a bag of sweets in front of us and we'd be so fast." He smirked and crossed his legs as he watched Dorcas dig into the bag. Iain was familiar with pepper imps. He usually had a few of them lying around for when he had a bad cold, because those things cleared your sinuses right out - even if they made his eyes water and his stomach turn. "Aw, only pepper?" he teased. "I prefer the cinnamon ones, but this will do."
He grinned as he took the candy. "You should be happy I haven't eaten yet," Iain joked, "less chance of vomit." He stuck out his tongue and winked at her before popping the pepper imp into his mouth and biting down on it - sucking on it would only prolong the inevitable and lengthen the whole ordeal. To be honest, he'd never had one on an empty stomach before, but it was safe to say Iain was definitely awake now. The burn shot up through his nose into the frontal sinus, making his eyes water, and it only took a second before he could feel his ears heat up, blood rushing into them as they popped and steam emerged from them. He blinked furiously, laughing and wiping at the tears threatening to roll down his cheeks, taking big gulps of air in the hope of cooling his mouth down a bit. "Ooh- ah-" He writhed a little and swallowed. "I always underestimate these things!"

[/style] Her eyes watched excitingly as he took the candy from her and placed it in his mouth. Dorcas couldn't help but fall backward from laughter as steam spouted from his ears and his eyes watered. "I'm - so - sorry!" she shouted through laughter, clutching her stomach with both hands as the familiar belly pain set in from absolute delight.
Doe's laugher subsided as she sat back up, still chuckling as she looked to the air near Iain's ears that was propped up from being blown backward. "Here," she said softly, leaning her hands forward to set his hair properly. She grinned, her blushing kept at bay surprisingly, and then looked in her bag. "I think I've got a cinnamon one in here somewhere...maybe we'll find it once we get through some of this," she said, then looked up. "For some reason I keep buying this stuff, when I can barely get through what I have," Dorcas chuckled. It was just one of those things. She always figured a couple more chocolate frogs couldn't hurt, or a few more of this and that would keep her stocked - just in case, of course.
At least the case had come...years after she started her candy collection.
"I guess it's my turn!" Doe cheered, picking up another Imp from the floor where she'd laid a few. "Okay...okay..." she prepared herself, unable to control the laughing that consumed her. "OKAY!" she said defiantly, before shoving the candy into her mouth, sucking on it for a few seconds before swallowing. Her ears burned as smoke spewed out of them, and her entire face felt sour. Dorcas clenched her eyes shut and squished up her nose, grabbing at the table as the burn swallowed her senses. "Holy cow," she whispered finally when she was able to speak without stinging lips. "Now I know why I have those stocked up," Doe laughed.
"Hm, you can pick the next if you'd like," she offered, holding the bag toward him. It was only fair for them to take turns on their little candy challenge.

"My skull feels empty, I think my brain might have evaporated!" Iain exclaimed, giggling before bursting into full-blown laughter. "Don't be- don't be sorry. It was just what I needed to wake up," he managed to stammer in between laughing. This was what he liked about Doe - the ability to laugh with him and at him, but also at herself. She tried to tame his hair once he'd caught his breath and he grinned brightly. "Well, we're off to a good start, huh?" He shifted, picking up the bag to rummage through it. He couldn't find anything cinnamon-y, but did find a chocolate frog (which was good, because he really was hungry, and chocolate frogs were more substantial than pepper imps, for sure. "I do not complain about your candy-buying habits," he chirped as he broke the seal on the box. "And I'm always happy to help you get rid of some!" He leaned back a little. "Watch, watch-! I can make it jump into my mouth, I swear." Of course, he just ended with a chocolate frog clinging to his face. "Aw, no, this was just a bad jump." He plucked it off and bit it in half. Oh, that was good.
Still munching on the chocolate frog, he turned back to Dorcas, leaving the candy bag for what it was for now. "Oh, yes, your turn!" He grinned in anticipation. "You can do it, Doe - I believe in you," he added when she hesitated, wooping and laughing when she finally did it. "Yes, why do you have them stocked up?" Iain sniggered. "They're good when you have a cold, admittedly."
Iain didn't have to be told twice to dig into the bad again. "Hmm.." He looked up, briefly, beaming. "Have you got any Fizzing Whizbees? We could see who goes higher."

[/style] Dorcas loved how they could be so silly together. She almost started up into a roar of laughter as Iain laughed, but ended up being able to contain herself to a fit of giggles. "We certainly are! And we have tons more to go through," Doe cheered, watching him rip the top off of a chocolate frog. Mmm, that sounded yummy. But she couldn't help but laugh as he swore he could get it to jump into his mouth. "Okay, let's see then," she said challenginly, but ended up rolling backward into laughter again as the frog hung at his cheek. "That's brilliant!" she squeeled through laughter.
She stuck out her tongue playfully as he laughed at her, though it was expected. "Actually, I think I gathered them for pranking purposes," she admitted, grinning sheepishly. "I think my original plan was to sneak a few to unsuspecting first years, but with other things going on I sort of forgot about them," Dorcas explained, though her thoughts on that subject faded quickly as he asked for Fizzing Whizbees. "Oh yea - they're right there, see?" she pointed out just a few candies below his hand that was already stuck in the bag. "But I want to see if I can get this frog in my mouth...like you obviously can't," she teased, then nudged him and laughed.
Doe snagged one of the many frogs stuffed in the bag and ripped the top off quickly. "One...two..." she counted down in a whisper, before almost jumping as the frog leaped up into the air. She pushed her body upward slightly, mouth open, and felt the chocolate against her tongue. She took a bite and watched as the body of the frog fell into her other hand, the head being savored inside her mouth.
She wore a proud grin as she chewed, then finally swallowed. "You better watch out, Iain - I could bite your head off," she winked, then laughed and took another bite of the frog, sort of hurrying it down her throat so it wouldn't melt in her hand. If she'd had thought of it, Dorcas would have grabbed a few napkins for them, sure they'd make a mess by the end of this fun. Ah well.

He was still trying to contain his laughter as he rubbed at the chocolate stain on his cheek. Bleurgh, sticky. "Too bad you haven't got a camera at the ready," he joked, "that would've been an interesting picture to send home. Very attractive," he sniggered. "Aww, poor first-years, targeted by someone so much older and stronger than they," Iain said dramatically, though he couldn't keep up the look of sympathy as he chuckled again. "Pranking first-years is hardly a challenge, though, is it?" he added with a raised eyebrow. "You can do better than that, surely!"
Iain peered into the bag. "Oh, right, yeah." He snorted. "I must be going blind, didn't see them at all." Carefully, he dug in and got out a handful of them, putting the sweets on the carpet next to them for now as Dorcas was going to try and get the chocolate frog to actually jump in her mouth. "Pff, such things take years of practice," he boasted teasingly, though he knew that really wasn't true and he'd never tried it before before now. Seeing her jump as the frog did made him giggle - what was it with girls and flinching at the sight of something jumping at them. (Granted - Iain had been just like that, but then being a beater for a couple of years had cured him of that.) "YES!" He laughed, throwing his head back and applauding. "You're a natural, Doe!" He chuckled as he watched her devour the frog, pinching something shapeless and fudgy (possibly a misshapen fudge fly, by the taste of it) and popping it into his mouth with a grin. "Nah, you couldn't," he objected to Dorcas' 'threat', "my head's far too big and your mouth is too small - which is probably a good thing, I mean: just imagine if you actually could?!" That was a bit of a disturbing mental image.

[/style] She laughed at the thought of her parents seeing such a picture. "Yea, I'm sure Dad would be absolutely thrilled about it," she chuckled. Her parents were great, actually, but if they ever saw something that made them think she wasn't being serious about school - like her bit of fun she had now, for instance - they would probably send her a stern letter to describe her 'hard work thus far' in school. Sometimes, she wondered if her parents even remembered their days at Hogwarts. Surely they couldn't have had their noses stuffed in books the entire time.
"I'll get you a cane so you can feel around, Sir Murray of Blindness," Doe shouted, her chin tilted into the air and her tone drenched with pride. She let out another loud laugh as he cheered for her accomplishment of getting the frog. "It was bloody brilliant, eh?" she offered, taking a small bow with her hand resting on her stomach. Beaming, she watched him pop a smaller chocolate into his mouth. Dorcas grinned. "Yea...I don't think she'd be as tasty as you think," she teased, her smile widened.
She looked to the floor in front of him to see the package of Whizbees and grinned. Doe reached out for the bag and ripped it open curiously, taking one out. "I can go first - since you did last time," Dorcas said, more in confirmation than question. She sucked up the Fizzing Whizbee then swallowed. In a matter of seconds, she floated off the ground just a few inches. She grinned as she landed back down, giggling. "Not too high, but let's see if you can go higher!"

Iain chuckled and shrugged. He wasn't sure what his parents would think. He sometimes felt bad for not being more level-headed like Cailean, but then his parents never really showed what they thought about it. Deep down, he knew they were worried about him at times, but he wasn't sure about what exactly, nor what he should do about it. He laughed and looked scandalised when Dorcas suggested a cane. "I don't need no cane, missy!" he objected, grinning and getting up. "I've got this common room memorised, every inch of it, and I could walk from one way to the other with my eyes closed if I so wished." He nodded and grinned. This was really the sugar talking. Iain wasn't even sure why he was saying this, he just liked making people smile and laugh and this sort of stuff seemed to do the trick.
He tapped his hands on his thighs as he waited for Doe's levitation to wear off. "It's really a pity they only get you up a couple of inches," he said almost thoughtfully. "Higher would definitely be better." Of course, Iain was missing the obvious point of safety - even dropping down from two feet could go very wrong very quickly in the wrong environment. Iain took a Whizbee of his own and looked down as he started floating. "Am I higher? Am I higher?" he asked, unable to see himself. "Do you think it would help if we took more at once?"

[/style] Doe burst into a fit of giggles as he strutted around talking about how he could walk with his eyes closed. It might be fun to see that - especially if he really couldn't do it. She laughed until he took his Whizbee, then watched him rise - giggling again as he questioened his height. "I think you're about the same!" she cheered, thrilled that neither of them had 'won.' Dorcas could be a bit competitive sometimes, though she highly doubted she'd get worked up over a simple thing like levitating from a candy.
"Ooh, more than one?" she asked, thinking. She set her hand at her chin and rubbed it, not being able to contain the laughter that followed. Dorcas grinned at him and shrugged. "I dunno, could be dangerous," she warned, her voice lower and more mature. A grinned sneaked across her features. "Let's do it!"
Dorcas giggled and took a few out of the bag, then nodded at him. "Go on - you first!" she cheered. Mainly she wanted him to go first to see if it was safe, actually. Sure it was a pretty poor way of experimentation, but he was the guy after all.

Iain raised a pointed eyebrow, managing to look serious for about a second before laughing again. "Okay, you don't believe me - I will totally show you, wait-!" He jumped over the couch (one foot on the seat, one on the backrest, and precariously landing on the floor) and jogged to the far end of the room. "Okay, I'm going to- oh, wait, blindfold-" He patted himself down as though hoping to find a forgotten tie somewhere, which of course there wasn't. "Uhm- well, just trust me on this then." He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, as though he was concentrating. "Okay, here I go then, watch-" He walked a few incertain steps before gaining more confidence. "I know there is a table here and-" Iain felt for the chair. "I will totally go over it instead of around it." Stepping onto the chair, his next step landed on the tabletop, his eyes still closed. "Hah, see? Fine so far!" he challenged, making about two steps and then hesitating because he knew the end of the table had to be near. He tried to discreetly feel around with his foot, eventually finding the other chair. "Gonna step down now.." He was biting his lower lip in concentration, but grinning still.
"Yay, we're equally awesome!" he cheered as Dorcas declared neither of them had won. Iain clapped his hands as they decided that more than one might be dangerous. "Nonsense! It's candy - what's there to be dangerous?" Rising to the challenge, he popped four of them into his mouth and swallowed. "Three tries and one for luck!" He felt himself floating off the floor and looked at Dorcas expectantly. "And?"
